Vicki S. May

June 26, 1940 — June 13, 2022

FITCHBURG - Vicki S. May, 81, passed away at home with her family at her side, on June13, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Vicki was born to Edna (née Wismer) and Arnold Bouma in Holland, Nebraska on June 26, 1940. Vicki married Marlynn May in 1959 and they had two children, Jodi Morton-May (Gary Morton) and Doug May (Dawn Larson May). Vicki married her life partner of 33 years, Susan Cary, on June 26, 2015, in a joyful ceremony with family. Vicki was a compassionate, wise, and knowledgeable psychotherapist. She earned her M.A. at the University of Wisconsin ~ Whitewater and was a founding member of Harmonia Madison Center for Psychotherapy. She enjoyed a long and successful career as she guided many people through challenging events in their lives. She was committed to helping people find meaning and insight in their lives and relationships. Through her work, Vicki sought to make the world a better place. Vicki’s lifework revolved around constructing meaningful relationships. She was a dedicated mother, grandmother, wife, friend and therapist. Construction was a theme in Vicki’s life. She took great pleasure in constructing and remodeling rooms and nooks in her house to create an ever-evolving welcoming and comfortable home for her, Susan, and their pups. Vicki always had a project in motion… or was imagining the next one. Vicki never lost the mechanical skills and creative inclinations she honed as a child on the farm. To mark the occasion of her 70th birthday she bought herself a shiny new Kubota tractor, complete with a bucket scoop in front. The orange machine brought her hours of joy as she used it around the yard and for her many projects. If the Kubota was running, Vicki was smiling. Vicki is survived by her wife, Susan Cary; daughter, Jodi Morton-May (Gary Morton); son, Doug May (Dawn Larson May); and her grandchildren, Meghan and Garrett May. Vicki is preceded in death by her parents, Edna and Arnold Bouma; and sisters, Beth Leuders and Laurie Kolenbrander. As we mourn the loss of Vicki’s physical body, we know she is not gone. Her spirit lives on within the beautiful relationships she cultivated, and in the hearts of those who were touched by her love and compassion. A memorial service for Vicki will be held at 11 a.m., on July 30, 2022, at ORCHARD RIDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST,1501 Gilbert Road, Madison. A luncheon will follow.
