Russell E. Bates

MADISON - Russell E Bates, age 89 went to be with his Savior on Nov. 25, 2016 surrounded by family. He was born on Jan. 8, 1927 in Madison, Wis., to Clifton and Marie (Olson) Bates. He graduated from Central High School and attended the Wisconsin School of Music where he majored in Voice. He married the love of his life, Patricia Ann Merkle on Oct. 28, 1950. His first music recital was on April 8, 1951 and his passion for music allowed him to continue to perform at local weddings, churches and clubs. He worked in sales for 39 years selling office supplies and duplicating equipment retiring as a National Sales Manager. He always had the gift of gab and the opportunity to make the sale was another chance to perform, similar to his passion for voice. After retiring he continued working part-time as a sales representative and in banking, finally retiring again in 2003. Russell is a veteran of WWII serving with the 78th division in Germany. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Patricia Ann (Merkle) Bates; their three children, Douglas (Terri) Bates of Grafton, Nancy Albright, and Kathryn (Thomas) Fields of Madison; six grandchildren, Sarah (Josh) Seykora, Amanda (Tim) Gunderson, Jenessa (Joseph) Anderson, Kaila (Devin) Traff, and Adam Albright; and 12 great grandchildren. Russell was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton and Marie Bates; sister, Helene Tomlinson; granddaughter, Amy Albright; and son-in-law, Ray Albright. Services will be held at MIDVALE COMMUNITY LUTHERAN CHURCH, 4329 Tokay Boulevard, Madison, on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. Visitation will be at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be directed to Midvale Community Lutheran Church, 4329 Tokay Boulevard, Madison, WI 53711.
