Reginald J. Acquin

MADISON - Reginald Reggie Acquin died peacefully in Madison, Wisconsin, on February 11, 2018. Reggie was born in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, on the St. Marys First Nation reservation. The St. Marys Band is one of six Wolastoqiyik or Maliseet (a.k.a. Malecite) Nations on the Saint John River in Canada. He was very proud of his Native American heritage. His Native American name, Pohegan, was given to him by his grandmother, and means Spirit-Helper. Reggie received his high school GED in 1976, and an Associate Degree in Arts from Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1979. During his life, Reggie worked as a house painter and was skilled at home restoration. He was also an artist, a poet, and a writer. At one time, he worked as a waiter at a well-known, upscale restaurant in Connecticut. He was also an excellent athlete, and was a Triple-A baseball minor league catcher. He loved reading the Sunday New York Times and engaging in philosophical and moral discussions, and was a political activist on many issues relating to Native Americans. Reggie is survived by a son, several brothers and sisters and other relatives in Connecticut and New Brunswick. According to Reggies wishes, his remains have been cremated and will be spread over a lake in Wisconsin in spring or summer.
