MADISON – Rae Silvestre, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Feb. 12th, passed away on Monday, April 30, 2007 at the HospiceCare Center in Fitchburg. Rae was 6 years old when she and her parents emigrated from Europe and settled in New York City. It was there she grew up and received her education. After graduating from High School, her parents moved to a small farm they had purchased in upstate New York where she spent several years. She subsequently married and raised a family of her own in New York City. Rae worked at various positions in the hospitality industry. Two of her favorite positions were at the Lincoln Center and Yankee Stadium. Rae came from a family of classical musicians and pursued her interest in music by teaching piano for a number of years. Upon the death of her husband Frank, she moved to Madison in the 1970’s to join her son. She participated in various organizations, including the Women’s Auxiliary of the Eagles Club, where she served as president in 1986-87. She also volunteered as a City of Madison poll worker for several years. Rae is survived by her son Edward(Helen) Nager, of Madison and by her only grandchild, Nicholas Nager of Madison, whom she adored and in whom she found great pleasure. The family extends their sincere appreciation to the many people at HospiceCare who gave her compassionate and loving care during her final days. Family and friends will sadly miss Rae and will always keep her determination, wit, candor, and grace close to their hearts. Private services will be held at a later date.
