CHARLOTTESVILLE, VIRGINIA - Philip A. Rice, 87, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on February 4, 2011 at the home of his daughter, Laurel, surrounded by family. He was born on May 20, 1923, in Port Washington, New York, the son of the late Reginald and Mildred Rice. He graduated with a degree in Industrial Engineering from Syracuse University in 1948. Mr. Rice also served in the United States Navy during WW II. He spent the majority of his career as County Highway Superintendent in Wayne County, New York, retiring in 1990. Phil was a lifelong athlete and musician, playing trumpet in the Charlottesville Municipal Band for most of his retirement years. He was very active in the life of St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville as well as a volunteer in the UVA Cancer Center. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Louise Wysong Rice, and his 6 children and 14 grandchildren: Mark Rice and Lisa Bailey (Julia and Katherine), Marjorie and James Fulmer (Brian, Susan and Brendan), Brian and Bonnie Mandell-Rice (Rachel and Jenna), Laurel Rice and Eugene Foley (Olivia and Conor), Preston Rice (Carlye and Colton), and Philip and Joyce Rice (Preston, Liam and Aiden). He is also survived by his younger brother Charles Rice of Louisville, Colorado. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville, Virginia at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 12, 2011. Memorials may be made in his name to The Charlottesville Municipal Band or St. Paul’s Memorial Church in Charlottesville.
