CASSVILLE - Mary A. Metcalfe, age 87 of Cassville, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 17, 2021, at the Sun Prairie Health Care Center with her family by her side. She was the daughter of Clara Adrian and Joseph Adrian. Mary is survived by her daughters: Jean (Terry) and Joan (Kevin); six grandchildren: Nathan (Jackie), Adrienne (Dave), Paul, Jessica (Keith), John, and Ryan; six great-grandchildren: Kaylie, Makenzie, Penny, Mari, Michael and Emilia. The shape of Mary’s life included raising three children with her “best pal” and husband, Gene: A family life that must have resembled something close to a Norman Rockwell painting in a beautiful home along the Mississippi River. Throughout much of her life, she captured the details of life’s shape in a series of tidy, nondescript notebooks. These notes aren’t journals in that they don’t offer any opinions or judgements. Rather, simple notes about what was for dinner, who came to visit, the result of the Brewers game and other details often lost in the shuffle of a life built around family and fun. These details are worth remembering. And while they helped to paint the whole picture, it would be impossible to truly know her without sitting down with her for a game of cards, a snack in between meals or a beer before bedtime. Mary was as sharp as a tack, a careful watcher of her loved ones and wouldn’t rest until everyone at the table had their perfect plate of food in front of them for breakfast, dinner and supper. Mary loved immensely and listened with her heart. She was the orchestrator of fun and yearned for everyone to have a good time. From card games to super soaker fights, feasts for the holidays to summer days on the Mississippi, epic Easter egg hunts to cleaning out the candy and toy aisle at Okey Market anytime the grandkids and great grandkids came to town. Mary could draw a smile on everyone’s face, and we will miss her smile dearly. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Gene and son, Michael; and her brothers Tom and Richard. Hopefully they can get her to sit down so they can all enjoy their perfect plate together. A celebration of Mary’s life is being planned for this spring. A special thank you to all the doctors, nurses, and staff at both SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital and the Sun Prairie Health Care Center who assisted with Mary’s care. All Faiths Funeral & Cremation Services of Madison is assisting the family. Online condolences can be made at www.866allfaiths.com.
