Lovette Smith Powell

Mrs. Lovette Smith Powell was born in Tuscaloosa Alabama, April 17, 1951; to Lovell and Lillie Mae Smith. Lovette enjoyed a loving childhood and was a bright student. Over the years Lovette would relocate with her mother to Gary Indiana where she graduated from West Side High School. Lovette went on to become the mother of four wonderful children; Samuel Smith, Rukiya Swan, Kaulia Powell, and Lovell Smith. She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist, Madison, Wisconsin and was baptized in July of 2005. Lovette was always on the quest for learning, achieving many of her pursued goals. She graduated from Summit Academy OIC and received the Jerry E. Erdmann Award in Accounting, she also received the Presidents Award from the same institution. Her accolades at Summit Academy OIC earned her an accountant position within the institution. Lovette worked a variety of jobs, but her longest tenure of employment was with GE in Cleveland, Ohio. Lovette was especially proud of being placed on the Deans List at Madison Area Technical College during the spring of 2011. In recent years her most notable employment was with Walgreens, where she was awarded Walgreens Retail Employees with Disabilities Initiative certificate. She was also a member of Madisons Journey Mental Healths Consumer Advisory Committee. All of Lovettes engagements with her community helped to cultivate her beautiful life. Lovette blessed us all with her skillful artistic talents. In her free time she painted and wrote poetry and prose that allowed her to critically analyze life and the world we live in. Lovette is preceded in death by her parents and her only brother, Louis Clay Seay (L.C.). Lovette also leaves behind the undying loyalty of her husband, Gregory Powell. To cherish her memory. She leaves behind her children; Samuel (Barbara) Smith of Indianapolis IN, Rukiya [Alvin] Swan and Kaulia [Charlie] Powell, both of Madison WI, and Lovell Smith of Minnesota, MN. Lovette also leaves behind her three siblings, Mary McCoy of Cleveland, OH. Theresa [Henry Sr.] Sanders of Madison, WI., and Carol Heigler of Philadelphia, PA. Missing their grandma will be Kynala Phillips, Kahleeil R-Powell and Karleese Logan-Powell. Lovette Powell leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews and was also the surrogate grandmother to many children in her community. A Celebration of Lovettes Life will be held at ALL FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4058 Lien Rd., Madison, on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015 beginning at 4 p.m. Family visitation will be held on Sunday at the funeral home from 3 p.m. until the time of service.
