Karlyne Ann Hoogenakker

MADISON - Karlyne Ann (Nichols) Hoogenakker passed away Saturday, November 03, 2012 at Walnut Grove Assisted living facility in Middleton, Wisconsin. She was born to Jennie and George Nichols in Colfax, Iowa on March 26, 1928 and attended Colfax Public School until moving to Albert Lea, Minnesota where she graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1946. Karlyne, more often known as “Nicki”, married Arvin Hoogenakker of Pella, Iowa on August 22, 1948, and were married for almost 57 years. The couple lived in Pella where they owned and operated Hoogenakker Decorating and Gifts for over 15 years, and Arvin worked as a painting contractor. Nicki and Arv shared a close circle of friends and enjoyed playing cards, dancing to big band music, and spending time with their grandchildren, Katie and Andy, who would frequently visit Grandma and Grandpa to attend what was fondly called “Manners Camp”. Nicki and her husband Arvin retired to Avon Park, Florida in 1994 where the couple enjoyed the warm weather and decorating for Christmas. In 2003 the couple moved to Madison, Wisconsin to be closer to family. Nicki was preceded in death by her husband, Arvin, and two brothers Ronald Nichols and Leland Nichols. She will be missed by her son Ron (Peggy) Hoogenakker of Marshall, Wisconsin, her daughter Jillian (Michael) Tatkow of Verona, Wisconsin, and her grandchildren Katie Hoogenakker (fiancé Nate Stam) of Waupun, Wisconsin, and Andy Hoogenakker (Special friend Lauren Sutton) of Upperville, Virginia. Nicki was fortunate to have step – grandchildren Will (Christie) Plamondon and Beth (Brett) Hattel of Chicago, Illinois, and Andrea Tatkow of Madison, Wisconsin, as well as two great grandchildren Brigid and Michael Hattel. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Walnut Grove Assisted Living facility who provided wonderful care and comfort during her stay, and to Agrace Hospice Care who provided support during the last few months of Nicki’s life. A private family memorial service will be scheduled for a later date. Donations may be made in Nicki’s honor to Agrace HospiceCare, 5395 E. Cheryl Parkway, Madison, WI 53711.
