Judy A. Portolos

August 17, 1949 — June 14, 2024

DEFOREST – Judy A. Portolos, age 74, passed away unexpectedly at home in the early morning of Friday, June 14, 2024.

Judy was born August 17, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio, to parents, John and Olga Harasyn.

Judy was a 1967 graduate of Lincoln High School in Cleveland, Ohio, and a 1971 graduate of Kent State University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education. She was a student during the historic Kent State campus shootings during the Vietnam War in 1970. Her teaching career began at Louisa May Alcott Elementary School in Cleveland.

Judy married her high school sweetheart and partner in life, Jim Portolos, on November 20, 1971, in Cleveland. Jim and Judy traveled the country and experienced many adventures together. But the adventures truly began with the birth of their two lovely daughters, which completed the core four Portolos family. Judy and Jim moved their family to Windsor, WI in 1981.

Judy’s passion in life was being a mom to “Baby Nikki” and “Mooshy.” Mom loved to “mom.” She took pride in raising her daughters to be strong, independent women. While growing up, she would not go to bed until she knew they were home safe. She made soup and cared for them when they were sick, yet she never managed to get sick. She always had words of comfort and support when they needed it. Daily check-ins always ended with “Love you, bye.” She was selfless with her time and her love. She would give anything to be involved in any decision, event or discussion related to her girls. All felt welcome in Judy’s home, and she did not hesitate to extend her “mom-ing” to her daughters’ lifelong friends.

Once the girls grew older, Judy spent many years working the reception desk at The Premiere of Windsor. She enjoyed the salon banter, and talking with clients about their lives, children and milestone events. She was in-the-know on all local happenings. Her visits to The Premiere continued up to the week of her passing.

Judy’s teaching career continued in 1995. She was a substitute teacher for the DeForest School District for 25 years, retiring in 2020. “Mrs. P” was beloved by her students, and they were thrilled when she greeted them in the classroom. She was a no-nonsense educator, telling life stories and giving unsolicited “mom” advice, while making each student feel special. She made lasting friendships with fellow teachers and faculty and felt true joy in seeing her students grow and thrive.

Her love of animals was unwavering, forever doting on her dogs, grand-dogs (and even cats) over the years, and ensuring her backyard birds and rabbits were constantly fed. She was known for her love of cooking, brandy old fashioneds (sweet with olives), family card games, jigsaw and crossword puzzles, Cleveland and UW Badger sports, and trips to the casino.

Judy is survived by her two daughters, Nikki Jon Portolos (Steve Hicks) of Bolingbrook, IL, and Melissa Jon Rodriguez (Sam) of Windsor, WI; grand-dog, Dupa; grand-cat, Java; brother, Dan Harasyn; amazing sister-in-law and friend, Gail Harasyn; nephew, John Harasyn (Ashley); niece, Sarah Harasyn (Jon Poppy); and beloved great niece, Hadley. She also cherished many relatives and friends in northeast Ohio, forever proving that the bond that links your true family is not one of blood, but of respect and joy in each other’s life.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Jim Portolos; and her parents, John and Olga Harasyn.

Per Judy’s wishes, there will be no public service. Her ashes will be scattered at one of her favorite places to visit – Sanibel Island in Florida.

Mama, we love you bunches. You took us as far as you could take us. We will be ok. Love you, bye.
