MADISON Josephine Jo Foley, age 93, of Madison and formerly of Portage, passed away at St. Marys Care Center in Madison on February 22, 2017. She was born in Two Inlets, Minn., on Nov. 12, 1923 to Peter and Theresia Esser. Jo grew up near Portage, Wis., and married Jim Foley on Sept. 30, 1950. She spent her life working at a locally owned grocery store and was loved by her customers. She was very active in her church and devoted her life to the most important thing to her, family. She was the matriarch of the annual Thanksgiving Dinner, to which many friends and relatives could appreciate her love of cooking. Slightly less appreciated but equally as impressive was her skill in the card game, Euchre. Jo was preceded in death by her husband, Jim Foley; brothers, Paul, Norbert and Jerome Esser; and sisters, Clara Behling, Helen Holmes and Gertrude Giese. She is survived by her daughter, Barb (Jim) Sainsbury of Monona, Wis.; grandsons, Scott (Tracy) Sainsbury of Farmington, Minn., and Todd (Addie) Sainsbury of Roscoe, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Ella, Kendall, Brahm, Barrett and Emry; a sister, Agnes Heck of Wautoma, Wis.; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Linda Jo Maltby of Monona, Wis. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Marys Care Center for their compassionate care over the past three years and also for their support for the family over the past week. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY CATHOLIC CHURCH, 5101 Schofield St., Monona on Friday, March 3, 2017 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
