John R. Marshall, M.D., Ph.D.

MADISON - John Richard Marshall, M.D., Ph.D., age 77, died peacefully on Nov. 17, 2016. He was born Feb. 12, 1939, in Rhinelander Wis., as the first of three children to Richard and Christine (Trene) Marshall. After attending Jefferson, Wis. High School, he continued his schooling at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated from the Medical School in 1964. After an internship year in Hartford, CT., he completed his residency at UW in 1968. During the years of 1968 - 1970, he was a Captain in the U.S. Air Force at Randolph Air Force Base in Texas. In 1970, he was hired at UW as an Assistant Professor. He was promoted to Full Professor in 1978. John became residency director and directed the Anxiety Disorders Center in the Department of Psychiatry. He was chairman of the UW Department of Psychiatry from 1980 until 1989. He has over fifty publications in the area of treatment of severe anxiety disorders. He was the principal investigator on numerous clinical trials and a well-regarded forensic psychiatrist. He authored the book, Social Phobias in 1994. John retired from the University in 2005 and was granted emeritus status after a 35 year career at UW. John married Kathleen Hetzel in 1964 and had 52 years of a wonderful marriage. They had two children, Brent (Minneapolis) and Erin (Waunakee). John loved the Wisconsin Badgers and was a season ticket holder for basketball and football. He played basketball for the Badgers during his freshman year at the University. He enjoyed sports and travel but most of all, he loved spending time with his family. He absolutely adored being with his grandkids and watching them play sports. John was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Christine Marshall and his wife, Kathleen. He is survived by his children, Brent Marshall of Minneapolis and Erin (John) DuCharme of Waunakee; two grandchildren, Shea and Weston DuCharme; his sister, Mary (Michael) Kowalski of Waukesha and his brother, Tom (Joanne) of Fitchburg. A memorial gathering for family and friends will be held at BISHOPS BAY COUNTRY CLUB, 3500 Bishops Dr., Middleton on Monday, Nov. 28, 2016 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., with a time of remembrance by family and friends beginning at 5:45 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Agrace HospiceCare.
