MADISON - John Albright Reed, age 61, passed away peacefully in his sleep on April 12, 2009. John grew up in Ardsley-on-Hudson, New York, and attended Hackley School in Tarrytown, New York. He graduated from UW Madison, majoring in History/Psychology in 1972. After college he was married to Judy Gearhart with whom he had his first son, Robert. John’s inquisitive mind inspired Robert to follow a career teaching mathematics at various California colleges. John was quick-witted with a great sense of sarcastic humor. He was very generous to his friends, and loved to entertain. His extrovert personality and great sense of humor were a natural fit for co-owning two sports bars, Moguls and Teasers, and creating several sports radio shows in Lake Tahoe in the 1980’s. When he returned to Madison he met Karen Millar with whom he had a second son, Johnny. An avid sports aficionado through his life, he not only followed college and professional sports, but was an enthusiastic and talented tennis player and skier. John spent countless hours with his son Johnny, as his coach in tennis, baseball and basketball. John is the reason his son is now a professional tennis instructor. He was a loving and devoted father to both of his sons. John is survived by his sons, Robert A. Reed of Santa Cruz, CA, and John C. Reed of Woodstock, IL; and sister, Susan R. McLaine of Ottawa, ON, Canada. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert L. Reed and Susan A. Reed, and his older brother Robert L. Reed. A memorial gathering will be held at the ALL FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4058 Lien Road, Madison, on Friday, April 17, 2009 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a time of remembrance beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established.
