Joan Peterson

February 14, 1949 — May 24, 2024

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joan Peterson (Gladem), a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Joan left this world on May 24, 2024, after a nine-year battle with cancer.

Born on February 14, 1949, in Mobile, Alabama, Joan brought warmth and joy into the lives of all who knew her. In 1974, she moved to Janesville. It was there that Joan met the love of her life, Richard (Dick) Peterson, and they began their 50-year journey.

Joan was known for her generosity and dedication to helping others. She volunteered at four grade schools where she provided support to the teachers with her endless art projects and any other requests that were made. The kids at the schools affectionately called her "Grandma Joan", a title that was always her favorite!

Joan and Dick enjoyed spending quality time with family, weekend visits to Mauston, dinners at The Village restaurant in Footville, and playing cards anytime of the day.

Joan is survived by her husband, Richard and 3 children: Marian, and her children, Benjamin, Brandon (Shelby), and Marissa; Timothy; and Rose (Eric), and her children Aaron and Cody. She is further survived by 2 stepchildren; Sheila (Todd) and their children Cameron and Elise; and Jason (Joni) and their children, RaeAnne and Claira. She loved her brother John (Cheryl) and her sisters, Jewel Casique and Anita (Steve) Arrequin, and we appreciate their love and care. As well as in-laws: Darrell and Coleen Peterson, Doug and Kathy Peterson, Mary Gutknecht, Jeanne Zorbaugh and Lillian Arndt. She cherished every minute spent with her great-grandchildren, Skylar, Melaki, Amyla, Aaron, and Matthew.

We appreciate the friendship of neighbors Lynne and Ray, her close friend Mary, her counselor Loukia, and her hairdresser Emily for brightening her days.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Harlan and Mavis, and brothers Howard, Alvin, and AJ Gladem.

We ask that you remember Joan’s big heart and her generosity by finding time to volunteer at your local school.
