James Thomas Suter

MADISON - James Thomas Suter, Age 77, died peacefully at his home Friday, Oct. 9, 2009 surrounded by family. He was born Jan. 30, 1932 in London, England, son of the late Ann Suter. He was raised in Hillsboro, VA. by his grandparents Willie G. and Annie Suter. He served in the US Air Force from 1950-1954, a veteran of the Korean War. James earned his B.A. Degree in psychology, Psi Chi, from George Washington University in 1957. M.A. Degree in Social Industrial Psychology from G.W.U. in 1958. He received his 1st PhD in Social Industrial Psychology from G.W.U. in 1962, and his 2nd PhD in Political Science in 1967 from American University. He was a member of Sigma Xi, Honorary Society. Prior to Jim’s retirement in 1994 he served as a Consultant, Management Specialist, and Research Psychologist nationally. He also directed state and local not-for profit Health Planning Organizations in Maryland, Nebraska, W.Va., and Ohio. Some of his faculty appointments included Associate Dean, Coordinator of Research/Interdisciplinary Programs, and Associate Professor at American Univ., G.W.U., Hampton Institute, Yale Univ., as well as Ombudsman for the University of Nebraska. He loved Country and Bluegrass music and for many years played guitar and sang with the Potomac Valley Boys in Leesburg, VA. He is survived by his wife Nancy, 2 sons – Willie G. Suter and Thomas M. Suter, 2 daughters – Peggy L. Swauger and Tanya K. Salsbury, 2 granddaughters - Allison J. Swauger and Sara D. Swauger and 2 grandsons – Jacob R. Salsbury (his buddy forever) and Jaden K. Salsbury.
