James Michael Vangorden

MADISON - James Michael "Mike" VanGorden, 60, of Madison, Wis., died Thursday June 1, 2017 in the company of family at Agrace HospiceCare in Fitchburg. Mike was born in Hollywood, Florida to Ruth J. Morris and James F. VanGorden on Nov. 8, 1956. Mike loved to cook, hike and his grandchildren were his pride and joy. He was fondly known to many by his professional nickname "Papa J." He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Jackie. Mike is survived by his son, Shawn Scott of Madison; daughter, Rhiannon (Robert) Smith of Oregon; grandchildren, Cody, Raene, and Caylynn; "adopted" daughter, Shaina and grandson, Talon of Madison; brother, Peter VanGorden of Palatka, Florida; sister, Ruth Chappell of Satsuma, Florida; and many other family and friends. A celebration of life will be held at GOVENOR NELSON STATE PARK, 5140 County Highway M, Waunakee on Monday, June 5, 2017 beginning at 3 p.m. with visitation from 2 p.m. until the time of service.
