MADISON/COLUMBUS - James E. Schmied, 73, died at his home on Friday, Dec. 30, 2011. He was born June 9, 1938 in Columbus, Wis., the son of Berthold J. and Ann J. (Moreth) Schmied. Jim attended Columbus High School and St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. He played trombone and toured with the St. Johns Men’s College Chorus. He also served in the United States Army, stationed in Germany. Jim is survived by his two brothers, William (Anne) Schmied and Robert (Pam) Schmied of Madison; a sister, Ann Schmied Ramminger (Bob Wernerehl) of Blue Mounds; a sister-in-law, Rachel Thorson-Schmied of New Glarus; and by nieces and nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marie; two brothers, Donald and Richard; and a step-nephew, Erik. Per his request, there will be no funeral service. May he rest in peace.
