Jack W. Martin

WAUNAKEE - The world lost a kind and gentle soul with the passing of Jack W Martin. A native of Greenville, Ohio, he was born to Lavon and Zelma Martin on March 19, 1937. He graduated from Greenville High School and Ohio State University. In 1961, he came to Madison to begin a long career in Market Research at Oscar Mayer. He served his country in the 32nd Red Arrow Division of the National Guard during the Berlin call up in 1961. Jack was the devoted husband of Nancy, his life partner of 53 years; the proud father of Deborah Shinkle (Joel), Lori Hanson (Terry) and Michael (Tina); grandfather to five special grandchildren; and loving brother of Diane Cogswell. He was a lover of all things outdoors. He enjoyed spending time gardening, biking, canoeing, and hiking, especially around Cherokee Marsh. Traveling was also a joy, with much time spent in Arizona and visiting his children in the west. He also enjoyed woodworking and just puttering around his home (or those of his children). He gave generously of his time, wherever it was needed. He volunteered his time at Lakeview Library in Madison, the Overture Center for the Arts, and with the READI group of Oscar Mayer retirees. He was a member and Elder of Parkside Presbyterian Church. He fought a tenacious battle against melanoma, and found his peace on Friday, August 7, 2015. We will all miss his dry humor, his infectious smile, and his twinkly eyes. The family would like to express their gratitude to Drs.Yamil, Arbaje, Jining Wang, Michael Frucht, and Marjorie DiMaggio, and also to Agrace HospiceCare for their kind and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Friends of Cherokee Marsh, with designation to the Conservation Fund (PO Box 3390, Madison, 53704). A celebration of Jacks life will be held at FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 5763 County Road Q, Waunakee, on Sunday, August 16, 2015. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. with the service at 2 p.m. An ice cream social will follow. All Faiths Funeral & Cremation Services Madison (608)442-0477 www.866allfaiths.com
