Helen E. Alter

Helen Alter (Cook, nee Stieb) passed peacefully on May 19, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, George Alter. Their blended family includes Arne Cook (Jessica, Tanner, Alec); Shauna Cook; Roderick Cook; Greg Alter (Pam, Joshua); Jeff Alter (Jessi).

Helen’s sweet nature and kind heart were traits she never lost throughout her valiant battle with dementia. Everyone who met her loved her. Helen’s abundant love and caring nature made her an incredible nurse who spent decades caring for “her kids” at Central Wisconsin Center.

Helen was an original member of Madison’s Gem and Mineral Club and a true blooded rockhound. She generously shared with her children her love of rocks, nature, and critters. An avid organic gardener, she loved to dig in the dirt and nurse her large flower and vegetable gardens.

A talented artist, Helen expressed herself through many mediums like stone carving, jewelry-making, quilting, crocheting, macrame, embroidery, and so much more.

Our heavy hearts are full of the love she instilled in us, every day.

Join us at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 734 Holy Cross Way, Madison, on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, for a visitation at 12:15 p.m., and a service at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Wisconsin Public Radio.
