Heinz Swirgsdin, age 75, of Janesville, passed away Aug. 16, 2013, at University Hospital in Madison. Heinz was born on July 29, 1938, in Munich, Germany, the son of Theodore and Elsie Swirgsdin. He moved to the United States at age 17 with his family following World War II. Heinz lived in Chicago, and played professional soccer before settling in Janesville. He married Sheila Strain in 1969, at the Church by the Side of the Road in Rockton, IL. A skilled baker by trade, he worked at Rollin Pin Bakery and Pick n Save before going to work at Dana Corp. After Dana closed, he went to work for General Motors until his retirement in 2002. Heinz enjoyed fishing, bowling, and watching the Chicago Bears with his son, Karl. He was also a dog lover and was the proud owner of three German Shepherds over the years. Heinz is survived by his wife, Sheila; a daughter, Heidi (Frank) Jonczyk of Janesville; a son, Karl (Elesa) of Janesville; and his sister, Gerda Bhatt of Colombus, GA. He was preceded in death by an infant brother, who died in Germany during World War II, and his parents.
