Harry A. Stangby

Harry Stangby MADISON/FOND DU LAC -- Harry Stangby, 93, passed away peacefully October 21 at Sylvan Crossings Assisted Living in Fitchburg. Harry was born in Fond du Lac, on May 22, 1918, the son of Harry Sr. and Mina Stangby. He was raised in North Fond du Lac where he graduated from high school in 1936. In 1940 he graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Madison School of Business with a major in Accounting and Math. Harry returned to Fond du Lac and took a job at Giddings & Lewis Machine Tool Company where he worked from 1940 through 1983. He began as an accountant and later received his Certified Purchasing Manager credentials and became Manager of Purchasing and Material Controls. G&L also holds fond memories for Harry, as that’s where he met his future wife, Jean (Nelson). They married June 6, 1942, and within six months Harry entered the U.S. Army where he served four years in France during World War II. Harry was a Life Member of the Elks Club, and a member of the Masonic Temple. He belonged to the Church of Peach, where he held the offices of councilman and treasurer. An avid Badgers fan, Harry served on the board of directors of the North Central Mendota Gridiron Club where he was a longtime member. He belonged to the UW Alumni Association, serving a term as president of the Fond du Lac Chapter. He also served on the board of the National UW Alumni Club and was honored in 1986 with the Spark Club Award for Service to the University. After his retirement Harry kept busy by teaching a course in Purchasing at Moraine Park Technical Institute and volunteering for the Agnesian Health Care’s Adult Day Care program. He was an active volunteer there until his 90th birthday. In addition to the Badgers, Harry enjoyed golfing, going to Las Vegas, watching the Cubs (his license plate was CUBMAN), and most of all, spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren. Harry was a friend to all. He was known for his generous spirit and teasing manner. He was loved by everyone who knew him and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his daughters, Carol Stangby of New York; Sue (Phil) Sveum, of Madison; his grandchildren Matt Sveum of Columbia, Missouri; and Kelsey Sveum, of Madison; sister-in-law Gerry Bein of Stoughton and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean; his parents and in-laws; a brother Norman; his brother-in-law Bob Nelson and sister-in-law Barbara Nelson. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of Sylvan Crossings and members of both the Ruby and Amber Hospice teams for their kindness and caring during Harry’s time with them.
