MADISON - Grant Edward Collins, age 92, passed away on July 12, 2009 at St. Marys Care Center in Madison. Grant was born in Milwaukee on Aug. 31, 1916, to Fred and Alvina (Wolff) Collins. He was raised in Whitefish Bay and attended Carroll College in Waukesha. He was united in marriage to Dothea Ewert in 1943. Grant worked with his father at Collins Insurance Service in Racine and served as a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. His true passions were family, fishing, hunting and boating for most of his adult life. He also enjoyed a hand or two of blackjack. He is survived by his daughter, Gail (John) Grueneberg, of Madison; his son, Dr. Fred (Jean) Collins, of Philadelphia; four grandchildren, Lisa (James Tokarski) Grueneberg, Grant Grueneberg, Eric Collins, and Meghan Collins, his great-grandson, Peter Johanneson; a sister, June Ferrie; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dodie; his parents; and his step-mother, Lila Collins. Grant will be missed by all as we remember him from his healthier days as a gentle, loving, compassionate man. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the special staff at Willow Pointe Assisted Living and St. Marys Care Center for their excellent care and friendship in the final years of his life. Funeral services will be held at ORCHARD RIDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 1501 Gilbert Rd., Madison, on Tuesday, July 21, 2009 at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Grant’s name to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515, or to a charity of ones choice.
