Gordon Gene Hellwig

MERRIMAC - Gordon Gene Hellwig, 73, of Merrimac, would like all to know his excavating work is done. He received his last call on Thursday, April 27, 2017. A sort of job offer he couldnt refuse, for this project he will not be returning. This assignment comes with a huge bonus and a reunion with family and friends he has not seen in a long time. His new job takes him to a wonderful place where he will be working, making the rounds, and napping to his hearts content. Old country music, laughter and love are guaranteed. The whiskey is top shelf and will be served with his favorite foods. Gordy was born to Willie Frank and Letha Mae (Eberle) Hellwig on Feb. 28, 1944, in Monroe. He was a man who always worked with machinery and was not afraid of putting in a full day, seven days a week. He moved to Merrimac in 1978 to work at Badger Engine Rebuilders in Madison with his mentor, Darr Olson. When Darr retired, Gordy decided to start his own business and Gordys Excavating was born. Gordy and the business served Sauk County and the Merrimac area for the last 30 years. Gordy is survived by Nancy, his wife of 38 years; children, Robert (Sheila) of Oregon, Jamie (Pam), of Platteville, Gordy (Tracy), of Platteville, Deb Obert (Neil) of Orangeville, Illinois, Teresa Shashaty (George), of Boston, Massachusetts, Jeff (Tana) of Freeport, Illinois, Alan (Cheri) of Pembroke, Georgia, Angie Bailey (Bruce) of Baraboo; his brother Norm (Mary Jane) Hellwig of Texas; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives and his longtime companion, Willy. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Gary Hellwig and Johnny Hellwig; and his sister Judy Price. He left instructions with Nancy and his children to celebrate his life which will take place from 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 5, 2017, at the Merrimac Conservation Club, Highway 78, Merrimac. In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the family is appreciated. The family would like to thank Dr. Koch, Kathy Hollum, the entire staff at the Prairie Clinic, and the team at Fresenius Kidney Care Baraboo. To those who are always there to help with wood splitting, odd jobs, and the many, many other tasks assigned by Gordy, thank you. The family would to say a special thank you to good friend Denny Beich, for all his help and support over the years. You cannot sum up in a few paragraphs what type of man Gordy was. He didnt always do or say the right thing and he made a lot of mistakes along the way. But until the end he did it all the best way he knew how and he always loved his family.
