Gerald C. Mueller

MIDDLETON - Gerald C. Mueller M.D., Ph.D. was born May 22, 1920, in Centuria, Wis., to Emil F Mueller and Marie K. Pape. He died Nov. 7, 2010, leaving behind his three younger brothers, Burdette, Donald, both of St Croix Falls, and Carol of Boscobel. He is also survived by three children, Robyn (Vicki) Ashland of Oregon, Gregory of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Christopher of Madison; and three grandchildren, Caitlin, Bertrand and Casey. His wife of 65 years, Alice Jaeger Mueller, passed April 2008. Dr. Mueller was an accomplished Professor of Cancer Research whose career at the University of Wisconsin spanned the years from 1938-1991 and included research sabbaticals to Germany, Brazil, Japan and China. He had a passion for science, research and teaching and was the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his work. His role as an academic advisor was something he cared deeply about and stayed in touch with many of his students over the years. Dr. Mueller was also a valued research advisor for a number of institutes; served three years as UW Vice President of Academic Affairs and was a past president of the American Association for Cancer Research. Although his life focus and dedication was in science, he loved music and played both piano and trumpet. Canoeing in Ontario was a much loved summer family tradition as was relaxing in the pastoral Spring Green landscape on his small farm. Throughout his life, he and Alice accompanied at times by family members traveled extensively to many countries around the world. Family and friends will remember him for his pioneering work in cell biology and as an engaging and compassionate human being. Regarding a memorial service, Gerald's comment was, "There is no need for memorial festivities. Tell everyone I'm out of town, gone to be with Alice." However, this is one wish he will not get. A memorial celebration at Middleton Glen has been set for May 22, 2011 (his birth date) at 2 p.m.
