Frances P. Ray passed away at the age of 78 on December 18, 2024, at University Hospital in Madison, after a short and courageous battle with cancer. She was born on April 13, 1946, in Rouen, France. She is the daughter of Frederick Shugert and Andree Leveau.
Following her family’s move to the United States after World War II, Frances graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Lawton, Oklahoma in 1964. She married Philip Ray on April 8, 1967, in Madison. She then graduated from cosmetology school in 1969 and continued as a hairdresser for 55 years until her forced retirement in August 2024. Frances spent the majority of her career at the Ultimate Salon and Spa followed by The Magic Mirror Salon in the final years of her career. She maintained many of her clients throughout her career after developing close-knit relationships and life-long friendships.
Frances is survived by her sons, Michael (Linda) of Sun Prairie and James (Melissa Benisch) of Pardeeville; as well as her sister, Mary Gunnels. She is further survived by her six grandchildren, Hailey (Adam), Hilary (Greg), Hope, Jordan (Jenn), Tyler and Hannah; as well as a great granddaughter, Ryder; a great grandson due in May; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous in-laws who supported her over the years.
She was so loved and adored, finding even more family within her friends, coworkers, and clientele. Frances “Franny” was a true light in this world. She radiated joy and touched the hearts of each person lucky enough to cross her path. She had a heart of gold and a smile that could light up a room. She was best known for her contagious and exuberant laugh, one that could make anyone else laugh with her. Her love was unconditional, and her loyalty was fierce. She instilled in many her joyous spirit and tenacious strength. She will live on in the hearts of many, to never be forgotten and to always be cherished for the beautiful woman she was and forever will be.
Frances was preceded in death by her parents, Frederick and Andree; her devoted husband, Philip; her loving sister, Patricia Morrow; and her great grandson, Leon.
There will be a celebration of life in her honor at Olbrich Gardens, 3330 Atwood Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 4, 2024, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Evjue Commons. She will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Highland Memory Gardens.
