Eugene Raymond Varner entered this world on June 26th, 1919 to parents Charles and Marie (Shure) Varner. He left the world peacefully in his sleep after 90 years, 6 months and 9 days at 8:00 AM on Saturday, December 5th 2009, at the Skaalen Sunset Home in Stoughton, Wisconsin where he had resided for the past 3 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth (Mosier) on December 7th 2007. Eugene was born in Baltimore Md. but later moved with his family to the traditional family region of Johnstown, Pa. While a young child they again moved to Cincinnatti where he attended the Hamilton Boy’s School for several years. He and his mother later returned to Cleveland, Ohio for a short time before moving permanently to Chicago in about 1939 where both he and his Mother were employed at Carson Pirie Scott & Co. (a Chicago based retail department store). Eugene worked for nearly 30 years for Carson Pirie Scott & Co. where he met Elizabeth in 1940. Elizabeth and Eugene were married in Chicago on March 8, 1941 where they lived for many years before moving to Presque Isle, Wisconsin in 1981, and later to Milton, Wisconsin and finally to Stoughton. He and his wife were active in their church and had many friends during their lives together. He is remembered for his dedication to his work at Carson’s and the many long hours he spent working to provide for his family as well as the many years that he served on the church council at St. Simon’s Lutheran Church. Following his retirement Eugene and his beloved Elizabeth moved to Presque Isle in the Northwoods of Wisconsin where he spent happy days fishing and enjoyed the lakes and forests of the land where he had vacationed with his family since the early 1950s. For health reasons they later moved to Milton, Wi. where they were active in local organizations. Finally as their health began to fail they moved to Stoughton and lived in various communities at Skaalen. Eugene is survived by his three children Barbara (Larry Boyer), John (late Jennifer) and James (Karen). His descendants include 5 grand children and 4 great grand children. A Master Mason and lifetime member of the Ben Hur Lodge of the Fraternal Order of the Free and Accepted Masons, a memorial service will be given Eugene at the Skaalen home at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 12, 2009, officiated by the Reverend James Koza assisted by alcolyte, Riley Morris, Eugene’s great grandson.
