MADISON - Emma Kathryn Ella Myer, age 98, died surrounded by her loving family at Agrace HospiceCare on Tuesday, March 6, 2012. Emma was born on Feb. 20, 1914, to Carl Christian and Ella Kathryn (Schmidt) Sorensen in Racine. She is a graduate of Washington Park High School and St. Luke's School of Nursing, Racine. Emma was married to Raymond P. Myer, CPA, in 1936. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Racine, teaching Sunday school and serving as a Deacon. Emma was a charter member of PEO Chapter AR. A loving, caring mother, she participated in her children's schooling and activities. Emma visited shut-ins and sat by many bedsides comforting ill and infirm friends and neighbors. A talented seamstress, she designed and constructed her own dresses, coats and hats. She moved to Madison in 1977 following Raymond's death. In Madison, Emma joined PEO Chapter BC and participated in Westminster and Covenant Presbyterian Churches. She devoted years of her life helping raise grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Emma enjoyed gardening, pressing flowers and making note cards, which led to her friendship with and marriage to Samuel D. Caldwell in 1994. Emma and Sam enjoyed travels and times together at Attic Angel Place. Emma is survived by her daughters, Kathryn Sue Budzak (Arthur) of Madison and Joanne Spiegel of St. Louis, Mo.; son, G. Michael Myer; sister, Barbara P. Nelson (Rodger) of Milwaukee and Seminole, Fla.; nine grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-granddaughters. Emma was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Raymond P. Myer and Samuel D. Caldwell; daughter, Lynn Marie Moore; sister, Jane Marie Keller; and brother, Carl J. Sorensen. Emma was a selfless person, always helping others and creating happiness for those around her. She will be remembered as a loving wife, a devoted and caring mother, an adoring grandmother and great-grandmother and a loyal friend. Emma lived her life with a quiet dignity and will be remembered for her kind and giving spirit. She will be missed dearly by all. The family is grateful to the staff of Attic Angel Place and Agrace HospiceCare for their compassionate care. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
