Edward Sargent

MAZOMANIE/VERONA – Edward “Sarge” Sargent, age 92, passed away Friday, May 5, 2006 in Madison. He was born August 13, 1913 in Madison, the son of Louis and Emma Sargent. Sarge was a lifelong Madison resident, graduating from East High School. He served proudly in the United States Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945 as a Sergeant in the 531st Bomber Squadron, as a bomber mechanic. Sarge served during campaigns in Japan, China, New Guinea, Northern Solomons, and Bismark Arch. Following the War, he enjoyed playing Major League Softball, bowling and horseshoes. He was a proud member of the American Legion, Mazomanie. A highlight for him was riding on the Legion float in the Verona Hometown parade last year. Sarge was a dedicated Brewer fan and of any baseball game that happened to be on. He could recite the stats of any team or any player. Sarge could and would share a story with anyone willing to listen. He married Mable Snider in June of 1959. Sarge is survived by step-daughters, Dorothy Herald, Beverly (Sam) DiMaggio, both of Madison, Marcella Adamson, Sacramento, Cal., Marcia (Dick) Mickelson, Black Earth; sister-in-law, Katherine Sargent; a special granddaughter, Ann Marie Schmid; a special niece, Jean Younger; 21 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Al, Fred, and Ernie; a sister, Clara Bassett; two step-sons; a step-daughter; a grandson and a nephew. Funeral services will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL, 401 Femrite Drive, on Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 2 p.m. with burial and full military honors to follow. Visitation will be held at ROSELAWN MEMORIAL PARK CHAPEL from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Sarge's family extends a sincere thank you and debt of gratitude to the caring staff and his euchre buddies at Four Winds, Verona for making his last year enjoyable and full of smiles. It was "his home". An additional thank you to the kind and compassionate staff at VA Hospital especially Dr. Matt LoConte, and everyone at Hospice. A memorial fund is being established in memory of Sarge. "He was a good soldier." Grandpa, thanks for all of the white t-shirts.
