Donald J. "Hummer" Morris

Donald J Morris “Hummer,” passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 4th, 2013, with his family at his side. He was born Dec. 13th, 1938, in Stockton, CA, the son of Rex and Irma Morris. He spent his childhood in Camp Douglas, WI, and graduated from Tomah High School in 1957. In 1959, he was united in marriage to Grace E. Gruen in Tomah, WI. Hummer retired from General Motors in 1988. He and Grace traveled the United States in their motor home, creating many memories and meeting wonderful friends. At the top of Hummer’s list of things to enjoy was fishing for walleye with family and his “fishing buddies” and watching The Green Bay Packers. He especially enjoyed The Milwaukee Brewers spring training games while he wintered in Arizona. He was an avid outdoorsmen and fisherman who proudly displayed his mounted “trophies.” While Don’s kids were young, he was active in scouting and was a 4-H leader. He was a member of UAW Local 95 and of St. John Lutheran Church in Janesville, WI. Hummer is survived by his wife of 53 years, Grace Morris; three sons: Jeff (Betsy) of Lake Lotawana, MO, Todd (Bridget) of Columbus, WI, Kirk Morris of Milton, WI; daughter, Julie (Bill) Rott of Oconomowoc, WI; fourteen grandchildren: Zachery, Amelia, Megan, Laura, Elizabeth, Caroline, Joseph, Thomas, Kyle, Jacob, Sam, Lily, Maggie, and Ruby; one brother, Wayne (Linda) Morris of Mauston, WI. He is also survived by many nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather; and a grandson. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13th, 2013, at ST. JOHN LUTHERAN CHURCH, 302 N. Parker Drive, Janesville, WI. There will be no visitation. Following the church service, the family will meet and greet relatives and friends in the basement of the church with a luncheon to follow. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to the family and will be given to Fishing Has No Boundaries. If you knew Hummer, then you were blessed by his sense of humor and his passionate story telling. “Remember the good times!” –Hummer.
