MADISON – Catherine “Cate” Alice Maki, age 48 of Madison, beloved mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, partner, aunt and friend, died unexpectedly on Monday, April 30, 2007, after a long and courageous struggle with depression. She was born Jan. 19, 1959 in Virginia, Minn. Cate is survived by her sons, Ryan Maki, of Mt. Horeb, and Davin (Shelly) Bushey, of Cambridge; and her precious canine companion, Izzy. She is also survived by her parents, Ronald and Corrinne Maki, of Middleton; siblings, Deborah Hefty, of Verona, Dawn (Scott) Wavra, of Waunakee, Daniel Maki, of Waunakee, Joel (Carol) Maki, of Waunakee, Douglas (Laurie) Maki, of Columbus, and Roni Marie Maki, of Mt. Horeb. She is also survived by her very special partner, Maria Hanson, of Madison. Cate’s grandchildren are Nicole and Darrien Lettman, of Cambridge ; her nieces and nephews are Nathan Hefty, Dustin and Jonathan Haag, Brooke and Taylor Maki, Jennifer (Nick) Donovan, Brian and Samuel Maki, Alyssa, Kristina and Nikolas Maki, Keenan (Brooke) Kalinowski, Kyle and (Godchild) Heidi Esser. Cate is further survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Cate was preceded in death by her grandparents, Leo and Betsy Sarazine, and Emil and Hulda Maki, as well as other relatives and friends. Despite her own personal struggles, Cate had a gift for reaching out and helping others. This will continue through her enduring gift of organ donation. Cate loved gardening, reading, quilting, teddy bears, and being with people she cared about and loved. She was very much looking forward to a new chapter in her life with her partner Maria. She was a peace activist, a Crisis Worker and Volunteer at Dane County Mental Health, and a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ. Nana Cate will be greatly missed by her family and friends, who will see her presence every day in the nature that surrounds us. The family is grateful for the friendship and care given to Cate for many years by Paul Ginsberg, and all of the others who shared in her life. Services for Cate will be held at the ALL FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL, 4058 Lien Road , on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 7 p.m. with Rev. Charles Wolfe officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 p.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established. Rest, Catie; rest in peace. The sun will be up soon.
