Barbara Jean Martinez

MADISON - Barbara Jean Martinez, age 74, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Sept. 28, 2015 after a long illness. Barbara was born Sept. 15, 1941, the daughter of Ralph and Vivian (King) Lavey. Barbara spent much of her youth in an orphanage in Sparta, Wis., which instilled in her the strength and determination to raise her daughters as a single parent. Her children and grandchildren were the loves of her life. She retired from UW-Madison Housing in 2003 where she worked for 16+ years. Barbara loved the students she worked with in Ogg Hall and enjoyed telling stories of her experiences. Barbara had a unique sense of humor, loved playing games with her grandchildren, and had a wonderful kind heart. She had a significant impact on many people's lives and all who knew her loved her. She is survived by her three daughters, Lori (Edgar) Crass of Janesville, Lisa Lavey of Madison, and Linda Kincy of Mansfield, Ohio; a brother, Ralph Lavey of Crivitz, Wis.; seven grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Edgar Crass Jr, Joshua Crass, Selina Crass, Essense Kincy, Malcolm Kincy, and Neveah Kincy; two great-grandchildren, Chaynce Hunt and Zakari Smith; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters; Darlene Benton and Sharon Kochan. According to Barbara's wishes a private celebration of her life will be held.
