Janesville - Alma C. Becker died on September 19, 2011 at Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center, Janesville, WI. Alma was born on June 22,1918; the ninth of twelve children of Frederick August Tegtmeier and Lydia Sophia Tegtmeier (nee Bicknese), on their farm in Itasca, Illinois. She made the transition to eternal life which began at her baptism on July 21, 1918. Alma married Clarence Bernard Becker on May 22, 1947 in Lake Zurich, IL. Alma and Clarence had three children: Carol Rose, Rita Jean, and James Roy. Alma and Clarence lived most of their married life in Lake Zurich, IL. Alma was employed by the Ela Vernon High School in the lunch room, followed by working at Clayton-Mark Manufacturing. She also taught Sunday School for many, many years at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Barrington, IL. Clarence predeceased Alma on November 19, 1979. Alma moved to Janesville, WI in 1981. She volunteered for a number of years with Hospice Care. Alma was a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church where she was an active LWML member. She was also a superior car pool gramma where she got the nickname “Grudy.” An avid quilter, she also belonged to the Rock Valley Quilter’s Guild, having made hundreds of quilts for family, friends, and charity. Although Alzheimer’s robbed her of many things, she still embroidered or quilted for many hours everyday. Alma is survived by her children, Rita (Wayne) Subrt, Janesville, WI; James (Bridget) Becker, Bellingham, WA; Seven grandchildren: Victoria (Stewart) Oettel-Upton, Ashfield, Australia; Kristina Oettel-Clark, Orange Park, FL; Tara (Christopher) Boyette, Janesville, WI; Katherine “Kate” (Brian) Hommen, Elkhorn, WI; Samantha, Bentley, and Zoe Ila Becker, Bellingham, WA; Five great-grandchildren: Jacob and Joshua, Toby & Beatrice, and Savanna; One sister, Edna Hapke, Green Cove, FL; one sister-in-law, Gladys Tegtmeier, Caledonia, MN; and one son-in-law, Robert Oettel, Mena, AR; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Alma is preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; her daughter, Carol Rose Oettel (nee Becker); her parents, five brothers, Otto, Fritz, Edward, Walter, and Louis; five sisters, Lilly, Anna, Rosina, Martha, and Clara. Alma’s memorial service will be on Saturday, November 5, 2011 at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Janesville, WI at 11 AM. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at the church. If you plan to attend, please wear happy colors that a quilter might like. Her burial will be held at a later date at St. Luke’s Cemetery in Itasca, IL. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative at www.AlzQuilts.org , or Hospice Care Inc. Thanks be to God.
