Alan Carey

MADISON - Alan Carey passed away on May 9, 2009 at Oakwood Village West, Madison, Wisconsin. He was born in Ashland, Nebraska on January 15, 1920, the son of Raymond and Myrtle Carey. Alan’s father was an educator who moved from one Nebraska community to another as his career progressed. Wherever the family was living, emphases upon achievement and individual responsibility were paramount. The Depression and World War II further shaped the lives of the five Carey children. It was during the War that Alan met Ruth Ramaker, the love of his life. He and Ruth were married for 60 years and she made it possible for him to pursue his life interests. His master’s degree was in statistics from the University of Denver and his doctorate in economics was from the University of Texas. He spent much of his early adulthood providing economic information and interpretation to bankers and developers to determine what areas of Houston, Texas would support financial institutions, housing subdivisions and commercial developments. After 20 years in the business world, Alan’s career shifted to teaching. As a professor of management at Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg University, Alan took pride in building his courses around real world cases. He drew from him own experience and from other business examples that he researched for the salient points he wanted to address. Wherever Alan lived, he was a member of Rotary International. He served as club president in Houston and Bloomsburg and as district governor in Pennsylvania, always promoting community service and contributing to international fundraising campaigns. Genealogy fascinated Alan most of his life. His genealogical research supported memberships for various family members in. the Colonial Order of the Crown, National Society of Magna Charta Dames, National Huguenot Society, Jamestowne Society, National Mayflower Society, National Society of Daughters of the Revolution and National Society for the Sons of the Revolution, The culmination of this interest was the creation of books documenting for his grandchildren the path by which they are descended from Charlemagne. Alan is survived by his four siblings; daughters Sally Raschick (Rick) and Candy Porter (Jim); and grandchildren Malia and Chris Raschick, Maggie Moore (Leni) and Nick Porter (Claire). A memorial service will be held on May 16, 2009 at 2 pm at the chapel at Oakwood West. Special thanks to the staffs of Oakwood Village West and UW Physicians for the care and services provided to Alan and his family.
