MADISON - Adolph Walter Bach, born November 1920, passed away on Oct. 30 2017, at Oakwood West Tabor Hall. He was born in Switzerland and came to America with his parents and sister when he was 3 years old. He learned English during recess at his one room school in Clevenville, Wis., and his thirst for knowledge never left him. He grew up on a farm in the time period where mules and horses were still used to till the land. This may explain why he left the farm as soon as he could. He married the love of his life, Elsie Louise Bollier, on Dec 6, 1941. The next day, Pearl Harbor was attacked and their lives were changed forever. They bought a cheese factory and made Swiss cheese until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1944. He served in the European Theater in World War II and spent almost a year in the Occupation Forces before returning to the U.S. in 1946. Al (as he preferred to be known) then worked for many years at Bowman Dairy, then Wolf Kubly Hardware and finally as a custodian at Toki Middle School. Al will be remembered by all who knew him as a wonderfully kind man who didnt have a mean bone in his body. He loved his family and friends, reading, gardening, bee keeping, and playing the accordion. Al and Elsie traveled to every state in the union and most of Europe. He and Elsie were founding members of the Fitchburg Senior Center and spent many happy hours there. He is survived by three children, Charlene (Tom) Klossner, Randolph (Suzanne) Bach and Daniel (Joyce) Bach; two grandsons, Damon and Robert; give granddaughters, Heidi, Jennifer, Alana, Katie and Kendra; four great-grandsons, Noah, Miles, Owen and Lucas; and his sister, Elizabeth Bongard. He was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie; his parents; brothers, Hans and Fritz; and sister, Anne. A special thank you to the staff of Oakwood West, Tabor Hall and the Agrace HospiceCare staff. A memorial service will be held at the OAKWOOD VILLAGE WEST RESURRECTION CHAPEL, 6205 Mineral Point Road, Madison, at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10, 2017. Memorials can be made to the Oakwood Foundation.
